McKinney FFA talent takes fourth at districts.



The recent District 5 FFA Banquet celebrated several student awards and recognitions.

Courtney Jeffries and Meredith Houston of the McKinney FFA recently placed fourth in the District 5 FFA Talent competition. They competed among 250 FFA members from 35 school districts across Denton and Collin Counties at the organization's District 5 FFA Banquet.

Jeffries and Houston performed the songs "Red High Heels" by Kellie Pickler and "Stay" by Sugarland. They competed against a variety of talents such as drumming, clogging and unicycle.

According to the McKinney FFA Web site (www.mckinneyffa.org) the organization is "dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education."

The Texas FFA Web site said the 80-year-old organization is student-led and aims to change lives and prepare agricultural students for personal growth and career success. According to Texas FFA, the letters "FFA" stand for Future Farmers of America but the organization doesn't use the full name because it considers agriculture to be much broader than farming and ranching.

The District 5 FFA Banquet, as well as hosting the talent competition, celebrated awards given to FFA members over the past few months. McKinney students were presented with the following awards and recognitions:

The Junior Chapter Conducting team of Alex Neyrey (president), Keli Jo Cummings (vice-president), Courtney Jeffries (secretary), Taylor Lewis (student advisor), Domonick Lane (treasurer), Meredith Houston (reporter) and Taylor Carter (sentinel) was awarded their third place District 5 banner from when they competed on Nov. 15 of this year.

Jake Evans, 2008 MHS graduate, received a plaque for his recognition as District 5 Champion Star Lone Star Farmer-Placement.

The Junior FFA Quiz team of Alex Neyrey, Taylor Carter, Domonick Lane and Meredith Houston received their District 5 Champion award banner. They competed against 17 other teams and advanced to the Area 5 FFA Leadership finals on November 22nd at Crowley High School where they placed respectfully. They will receive their awards for the leadership finals at the Area 5 FFA Banquet in the Spring.

Kellie Dawn Pickler (born June 28, 1986) is an American country music artist and television personality. She gained fame as a contestant on the fifth season of the FOX reality show American Idol, eventually finishing in sixth place. In 2006, she signed to BNA Records as a recording artist, releasing her debut album, Small Town Girl, late that year. The album, which was certified gold by the RIAA, produced three singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts: "Red High Heels" at #15, "I Wonder" at #14, and "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind" at #16. The first single from her self-titled second album is "Don't You Know You're Beautiful". It was released in mid-2008 and reached the Top 25.
